OSU Spanish Online Site Facilitator Notes
From Jody Klopp

We have been having success with several schools using SKYPE (free service). If you would like to try this way to comunicate, this is what you will need to do:

1. Go to www.skype.com to download the software to a computer in your classroom. This computer will need to have a microphone and a web cam connected to it. Some web cams have built in microphones. I bought a web cam with a microphone at Radio Shack the other day for $40. There might be a computer at your school with a built in microphone and webcam (most new laptops have this).

2. After you download Skype you can add our screen names to your contacts. We have 2 - OSU Spanish and Jody Klopp.

3. The advantage of communicating with Skype is - We can see your students and they can see us! It personalizes the course. Also - it is easier for them to understand Spanish when they can see our mouths moving!!

4. However....with some schools the connection works well - with others it doesn't so we'll have to experiment!

There is a new site that you will need to let through your firewalls:

http://clear.msu.edu

We will be using resources from this national foreign language resource center at Michigan State University. One of the things we will be doing is asking our students to record their speaking tests to send to Spanish Online. Students who record speaking tests on their own computers will need to use a microphone that is attached to their computers.

Are you not able to see the point value on the grade book? Do you only see percentages? This is how to solve that:

After you have logged in to your account,

1) click on Grades

2) click on Grade Settings on the left menu

3) click on Personal Display Options

4) make sure that under "Grade Details" that points grade is checked

August 20, 2008 - Tutoring Call In

We will start receiving calls for tutoring sessions beginning Monday, August 25.

August 20, 2008

Usernames

We want to personalize the course more, so we are changing usernames to the students' real first names and last initial. We'll make this change before next Monday, August 25.
For example, this student who was SPN1S101, is now:

username: Marilyn F
password: (same one that I was given at the beggining of the year)

Notice that there is a space between first name and last initial.

1) How to put accents on computers:

I use these codes for my PC and my MAC. But there is also a way that you can set the keyboard as international. I haven't used that, but the instructions are on the http://oc.okstate.edu site. Log in and look for the FAQ link at the top of the page in the black menu bar.

Using Codes - for PCs like Dells - computers that run Windows

á = Alt + 0225

é = Alt + 0233

í = Alt + 0237

ó = Alt + 0243

ú = Alt + 0250

ñ = Alt + 0241

¡ = Alt + 0161

¿ Alt + 0191

When using this system, there are two important things to remember. First, when you type in the numbers, some keyboards require that you use the "numeric keypad" located to the side, rather than the numbers along the top. Second, on some keyboards, (laptops) you might have to use the FN key next to the alt key to get it to work.

Mac Users
To get accents on the Mac, hold down the Option key, and while holding it down, type the letter e; then release those keys and type the letter that you want the accent to appear on:

á = Opt + e, then a

é = Opt + e, then e

í = Opt + e, then i

ó = Opt + e, then o

ú = Opt + e, then u

For the ñ, hold down the Option key while you type then; release and type n again.

ñ = Opt + n, then n

The inverted punctuation marks are achieved as follows:

¡ = Opt + 1

¿ Opt + shift + ?

2) What if my students are working on a workbook activity, and they do not get done before the bell rings?

Be sure that the students have saved each answer that they have already done. Then click on the X at the top of the browser to leave the entire browser. This will place that workbook activity in the "In progress" mode. Students will be able to return to that activity and continue finishing the next time they log on to Spanish Online.

HOWEVER, this doesn't work if students are in the LockDown Browser. All work done in the lockdown browser has to be done in one sitting. The activities that have to be done in the lockdown browser are Vocabulary Quizzes, Grammar Quizzes, and Chapter Tests. These are the quizzes that require a password. So when students start a quiz or a test, be sure that there is plenty of time to finish. All of these were written to be completed within a 50 minute period. If you have students on IEPs that need extra time according to law, give me a call.

August 14, 2008

Here is a flash video about how to install the LockDown Browser- needed when students are doing Vocabulary tests, Grammar tests, and Chapter tests.

This video is about 3 minutes long.

LockDown Browser

Here is the sign up sheet for your classes. In the blank field next to the time, place the name of your school and the level of Spanish. Our goal is to speak to every student at least once a week. Divide your students into groups of 4. Then sign up each group for one session. All your students do not have to speak with us on the same day. For example, Plainview Spanish 2 group 1 could speak with us on Monday, Plainview Spanish 2 group 2 could speak with us on Tuesday, etc.

Send your tutoring session sign up sheet via email when you have completed it. (jody.klopp@okstate.edu)

Do you have a speaker phone in your room? Test to see if it works!
